Miss Squid Turns One.
Recently, we celebrated a Birthday.
Initially we were leaning towards "no party" as our stance on Miss Squid's celebrations, just Mum, Dad and the Birthday girl. Then I decided that I wanted to make a cake. Not just any cake, a Very Hungry Caterpillar cake. Such a cake seemed overkill for three people so we widened our scope to include our immediate family (based in Brisbane). This meant we were celebrating with 14 adults and 4 children. If we'd opened it up to further family and friends which we contemplated we would have easily got to 50+ people, which seemed a bit over the top for a first Birthday!

I am still very happy with it. The cake itself was a touch overcooked (oops) and dyed pink (Daddy tells me caterpillar guts would be pink inside).
The icing was very glossy by virtue of being a sugar syrup and eggwhite icing, the recipe for which I found when I googled "Fluffy Icing". All up, it was tasty and very well received.
Miss Squid (to my knowledge) had not had cake before this piece, which she seemed to enjoy!
I did make a note that next time to be wary of how bright to try to get the colours, as Miss squid wandered around for the rest of the day with a pink mouth!
The next day was Miss squid's actual Birthday and a day care day. I realised late at night this fact, so went to bed, promising myself to get up early to make another cake for day care. Her carer took some pictures of the aftermath...
Apparently it took two to three face washers to clean her up! I think all in all a good Birthday was had!
